Do You Need Pet Plan Insurance

If you treat your pet like a member of the family why wouldn’t you have a pet plan insurance just like you have for the other family members? Just as unexpected medical emergencies can come up for the human members of your family, your pet can come down with an illness as well. While veterinary bills are not as high as human hospital bills, a pet with cancer or another major illness could cost thousands of dollars to care for.

Consider these facts:

One in three pets will need emergency veterinary treatment every year.
Two out of every three pets experience a significant health problem during their lifetime.

The major question you need to ask yourself when considering pet health insurance is whether or not you would be able to handle major veterinary bills if they were to arise.

Imagine being confronted with having to watch your beloved pet die because you don't have the money to pay for medical care. The other option is that you leverage yourself in order to be able to pay for the medical care and then are in deep debt for the months, or even years, to come.

There are a number of things to look at as you decide whether or not a pet plan of insurance is the right answer for your four-legged family member.

First, decide what kind of plan you would need.

Some plans are much like human plans where they cover the basics of checkups and annual shots, so you know your pets regular wellness will be taken care of. Other plans allow a little more coverage and include unexpected illnesses, x-rays and more in depth coverage. Still other policies cover additional items such as flea and tick care.

Depending on the amount of coverage you want, the price for the coverage will vary substantially.

When humans sign up for medical plans there are often a lot of restrictions on which doctors they can go to depending on the plan they choose. Very few pet insurance policies work this way. For the most part you should be able to choose your own veterinarian with any pet insurance plan you select.

When it comes to paying for medical insurance for your pet, there are a variety of payment options. You could pay the same way you do for your personal health insurance, with monthly payments. If you prefer to get it out of the way, you can often pay a year in advance. Some insurance companies will even offer you a discount if you can afford to pay the full year up front.

While many families are not sure if they will ever really need the full potential of pet insurance, they often purchase a coverage plan for their pet for the same reason it's purchased for the human members of the family. While you don’t want to ever need to use it, and you are not planning for any major medical issues to come up anytime soon, if they were to happen, at least you would be able to get the care you need. A pet plan insurance will let you say the same thing about your four-legged family member.
