Things to Consider When Purchasing Cat
Insurance
Taking care of your pet cat is just as important as looking
after your own health. When your cat is healthy and provided
for, you are able to enjoy greater peace of mind and can look
forward to enjoying your pet for more years. When you select
cat insurance, there are a few key things you want to check
into and make sure are part of the overall healthcare package.
Here are a few examples.
Just as human beings should have regular checkups, so should
your cat. Make sure your cat insurance allows for at least a
couple of routine checkups each year. Often you can find
information about how often the policy in question will pay for
a checkup under a section that deals with preventive
maintenance. After all, a cat that can be treated for a minor
ailment is much less of an expense for the insurance provider
than a cat dealing with something that has progressed into a
major health issue.

Regular shots are another part of the cat's annual health
regimen that you want to see addressed in a cat insurance
policy. Again, check on the frequency that your cat can receive
the various shots recommended by your veterinarian. Hopefully,
they will either be covered in full or with a small deductible
involved.
Major medical is another issue you want to have addressed by
the cat insurance policy. In the event that your cat requires
surgery due to an accident or the development of a tumor or
polyp, you want to know that the policy will allow you to
obtain the best veterinary expertise that is available in your
area. If your cat is going to require convalescent care after a
surgical procedure, see if the policy you are considering will
also provide at least some financial assistance with that
element of the recovery process.
Pre-existing conditions are also a factor to be considered.
Many cat insurance policies will require a physical in advance
at least, and if there are pre-existing conditions that your
cat has been undergoing treatment for, chances are there will
either be a waiting period or the pre-existing condition will
be disallowed permanently. The circumstances will be impacted
by the nature of the pre-existing condition and the likelihood
of a full recovery without benefit of recurrence.
Whenever considering any cat insurance policy, it is
important to compare benefits with at least a couple more
policies. This can help you get a better handle on what types
of benefits are available through various carriers, and also
can help you get an idea of how the variance in costs may vary
somewhat from one provider to the next. Do not hesitate to talk
with the office manager at your veterinarian's office. The
office manager will most likely be able to tell you if they
experience recurring issues with a particular provider, whether
they accept coverage extended by a given insurance carrier, and
also give you additional tips on things to look at when
evaluating a policy in general.
